Please be reminded that NASS is only able to offer the self funding option rather than the minimum sponsorship option – participants will need to cover their own costs and are encouraged to raise much-needed funds for NASS in addition to this.

The Great Wall of China Challenge

18-26 April 2010

The Great Wall of China is one of the most amazing sights you will ever see – 8,885 km long and the only man-made object that can be seen from space.  Most tourists only see a small part of the wall but Across the Divide, as a result of their local contacts have managed to come up with a trek that covers a much vaster area, with the unique experience of camping in rural China. 

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Fly to Beijing

Day 2 – Transfer from Beijing to Gubeikou for briefing from expedition leader

Day 3 – First day trekking before walking down into a valley to campsite

Day 4 – Walk along restored sections of the wall with plenty of ups and downs before heading off to camp

Day 5 – Walk over the suspension bridge to 12th tower for lunch, then onto village of Gangfang

Day 6 – Trek along remains of a section before decent into a valley to a hotel on the edge of a reservoir

Day 7 – Last day of trekking through forests and final descent

Day 8 – Free day in Beijing

Day 9 – Fly to UK

DIFFICULTY: Moderate, 5-7 hours activity per day

Peru and the Land of the Incas

12 – 22 May 2010

The Inca Trail in the Andes is probably the most famous trek in South America covering stunning scenery across mountainous terrain, forest land, subtropical jungle and all the while taking in a part of history. The final destination is Machu Picchu – the lost city of the Incas.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Fly to Lima

Day 2 – Fly from Lima to Cuzco, then onto the Sacreed Valley and                  Cachicata

Day 3 – Tour of the Inca ruins at Ollantaytambo. Walk to camp at Soqma

Day 4 – Trek uphill past dramatic scenery of waterfalls and ruins to camp at Corimarca

Day 5 – Highest point of trek reached, with spectacular views of snow peaks and sacred valleys below

Day 6 – Descend into Elfin Forest, towards Sacred Valley, camp at Camicancha

Day 7 – Steep trail up to old Inca watchtower, views of Ollantaytambo

Day 8 – Board a train for 22km then climb trail to Machu Picchu.

Day 9 – Watch the sun rise in Machu Picchu before a night in Cuzco

Day 10 to 11 – Cuzco to Lima to UK

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Moderate/difficult at altitude, 8 hours trekking per day

Ladakh Himalayan Challenge

18-29 June 2010

Ladakha is a Buddhist kingdom renowned for its remote mountain beauty and culture. It is sometimes called "Little Tibet" as it has been strongly influenced by Tibetan culture.   Passing charming villages, monasteries and palaces, this trek offers amazing views of the Himalayas and finishes with a visit to the Taj Mahal in India which really will take your breath away.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Fly to Delhi

Day 2 – Cycle rickshaw tour of Old Delhi

Day 3 – Flight from Delhi to Leh

Day 4 – Explore Leh, walk up to Shanto Stupa and Shankar Monastery

Day 5 to 6 – Trek through outlying settlements, followed by acclimatisation day

Day 7 – Walk through Rumbak village before setting up camp

Day 8 – A steep descent rewarded with views of mountains and Plains of Ladakh

Day 9 – An easier day’s trekking. Finish at Stok with a night in a hotel and a celebratory meal

Day 10 – Fly to Delhi, coach onto Agra with the afternoon and evening free

Day 11 – Enjoy the Taj Mahal at sunrise, onto the Red Fort and then to Delhi

Day 12 – Return to UK

DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Difficult, 4-8 hours trekking per day

London to Paris Cycle

23-27 June 2010

 

Covering approximately 300 miles of the English and French rural and urban areas, the London to Paris cycle takes you from the centre of London, through rural Kent, across the channel, along quiet French roads finishing at the splendour that is the Eiffel Tower. Every night, you will be treated to a night in a quality hotel and wholesome food.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Greenwich to Dover (93 miles)

Day 2 – Dover to Calais to Arras (74 miles)

Day 3 – Arras to Compiegne (75 miles)

Day 4 – Compiegne to Paris (62 miles) with free time in the late afternoon and evening

            in Paris

Day 5 – Paris to London via Eurostar
