Who we are

The Plymouth branch was founded in 1983 by Dr. Peter Hickling under  the auspices of Mr. Fergus Rogers, founder of NASS.

Our branch aims to promote awareness of ankylosing spondylitis and to raise funds for ongoing research into the causes and treatments of it.

Anyone who has AS in the Plymouth area is very welcome to come and join us.

What we do

We hold an exercise session every Wednesday evening in Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.  The sessions alternate, one week gym exercises and the next exercising in the hydrotherapy pool.

We are supervised by our marvellous physiotherapists and we all work to our strengths. We can ask any advice from the physios, who are only too keen to help us to keep as active as we can.

We also hold social activities such as days out to places of interest, boat trips, raffles, skittles evenings, exhibitions, street collections and display days - these all help to promote feelings of well being and camaraderie.

We have fun which is a good way to support one another and to spread the word about AS.

A storming success

Storm running club chose Nass Plymouth as their charity of the month, with this they very kindly raised £240 for the branch. A big thank you to the Club for the generous donation. Below we have Leah Cooksly accepting the cheque on behalf of NASS Plymouth from Storm Running Club.

A fond farewell to Amy the physio

We had a great, but sad, session in the gym on Wednesday 21 September because we had to say bye bye to one of our lovely Physiotherapists Amy.

Amy has worked with the group for a couple of years but is now moving on to another hospital. I hope, that where ever she goes, there's another NASS group that can benefit as much as we have from Amy's expertise, professionalism and dedication. The group presented Amy with a basket of flowers and a card, and Amy bought along these lovely Flapjacks.

Celebrating Fab at 40 - May 2016

To celebrate NASS' 40th birthday the Plymouth Branch enjoyed a lovely meal on 14 May at La Bistro Pierre in the Royal William Yard.

To say thank for all their hard work and dedication to the branch we invited our amazing team of physios to join us.

Here they are along with some of the members and the brilliant cake made by our member Fern’s friend.

November 2015

We had a very good but sad gym session on Wednesday 18 November when we had to say cheerio to one of our physios, Jenny, who's leaving the group.

The physios who work with us are amazing and soon become part of the NASS family, so when one has to leave it's very sad. Jenny has been working with the group for over 4 years and her bubbly cheerful personality and dedication will be sorely missed.

The branch presented Jenny with a basket of flowers, a really cool Owl keyring and our Chairman Clive Hemsley, who is a children’s entertainer, made Jenny a very special balloon model.
