Who we are

Formed in September 1990, the Portsmouth branch has excellent support and guidance from the NASS physiotherapists who allocate people between our three groups depending on their exercise tolerance levels. We opened our third group in January 2014.

Our group of 40 members are a friendly, caring group of people and we enjoy holding regular social events throughout the year.

We work closely with and are supported by the rheumatology and physiotherapy departments at Queen Alexandra Hospital under Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

*The Portsmouth Hospitals Trust hand-out was produced by Simon Charters on behalf of the Trust based on a outline design from the branch.

What we do

The hydrotherapy and gym sessions are split into three groups:

  • Group 1 do hydrotherapy at 17.10 followed by a shared gym exercise group with Group 2
  • Group 2 do a shared gym session with Group 1 at 18.15 then go to the hydropool
  • Group 3 start with hydrotherapy at 18.00 when the above shared gym session is taking place then head to the gym

The groups have a 15 minute break before the next session.

Social events held throughout the year include meals out, summer barbeques and volleyball. We look forward to seeing you there!

NASS Portsmouth celebrate 25 years of happy stretching

NASS Portsmouth threw a big party at the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to mark their 25th anniversary.
NASS Portsmouth have 40 regular members attending their weekly physiotherapy and hydrotherapy sessions. Lead by NASS Trustee Roger Stevens, the members are a friendly caring group who enjoy holding regular social events throughout the year.
The branch work closely with, and are supported by, the rheumatology and physiotherapy departments at Queen Alexandra Hospital under Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust.
More than 100 attended the party, including branch members past and present, 17 staff from Queen Alexandra Rheumatology department and 22 physiotherapists and hydrotherapy team members. NASS Chairman Raj Mahapatra and family attended, along with NASS Chief Executive Debbie Cook and members of the NASS Team. Getting festive at Easter

They joined in with some 60 plus staff and people from other patient support group."
£100 dontation from Volvo Owners Club
The Portsmouth NASS Branch has recently been given a very kind donation of £100 from the UK Volvo Owners Club.

Mr Nigel Ayling, a director of the Volvo Owners Club, presented the generous cheque to a group of branch members at an exercise session at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The very kind gift will help the branch to keep on track and assist them in providing support to Ankylosing Spondylitis sufferers in the Portsmouth and South Hampshire area.
Portsmouth currently has 42 members including many senior citizens, disabled and retired people organised into three sub-groups, one of which opened only last year to cater for the people on their waiting list. These groups are run at a working loss as the branch endeavours to keep costs down so they do not lose people who cannot afford the subscriptions. The branch aim's to make up the balance each year through fund-raising. This kind donation will certainly aid them to meet their target this year.
Fame at last for NASS Portsmouth members Roger Stevens and Ashley Hiom
In February this year, Roger and Ashley were invited along with the NASS Director, Debbie Cook to take part in a local radio show and talk about AS.  Here is the podcast of the show to download.  Click on the picture to download or listen online.

Christmas Quiz - Success once more!

Just prior to Christmas, we entered two teams in the group's adopted "local" ("The Churchillian") Christmas pub quiz.
There were over 30 teams taking part this year as the event is very popular because the quiz raises £100s each year for "The Rowans" wonderful hospice just north of the city.
This was our 3rd year of taking part. In 2010 NASS P came 1st and 2nd, in 2011 it was 2nd and 3rd; in 2012 it was 1st and 3rd! The two teams also won many raffle prizes too.

A Successful AS Awareness Evening - 28th November 2012
We were absolutely delighted that over 60 patients and their families attended the meeting which included presentations from Dr Young Min, Colin Beevor, Claire Jeffries and NASS member Roger Stevens who launched the 3 year plan for the branch.  Part of the evening was also spent talking about the newly launched Individual Personal Care plan for patients living with AS.
