Who we are

The Swindon Branch is one of many in the country.  We operate in conjunction with the local hospital (The Great Western) Physiotherapy Team to provide supervised exercise sessions each week.  It is a self-help group aiming to achieve NASS objectives in providing support and encouragement.

What we do

The benefit of exercise is monitored and measured regularly at the hospital and our two organisations work closely for AS patients.

NASS Swindon fight to keep their hydrotherapy pool going

The Thamesdown Hydrotherapy pool, where the NASS Swindon Branch meet each fortnight is at crisis point because of its dire state of repair.  The pool has launched a campaign at the start of September to raise £135,000.  There are 17 regular NASS members who use the pool and Dominic McNamara, the Swindon branch chair says that the branch would be in real trouble if they did not have access to such a valuable facility.
“It’s deteriorating. They’re in dire straits, really. They have to do it – there’s no alternative. The pool is a Godsend to us,” he said. “For me the biggest thing you can do is exercise and the hydrotherapy pool, because you’re supported in your weight and movements, is absolutely paramount in the exercise regime. If we don’t get the money raised we could end up losing out big time.”

NASS Reception at the Houses of Parliament - 1st December 2010

Dominic McNamara, Branch Contact, was recently invited to attend a NASS reception at the Houses of Parliament.  The purpose was to thank the many NASS donors, supporters, volunteers from the branches and health professionals present for all their hard work and generosity in helping to make 2010 a year of very special achievement for NASS.

It was hosted by the MP Andrew George who himself has AS and who speaks from personal experience when he talks to NASS members.  Dominic was please to be able to meet up with both Robert Buckland MP (Swindon South) and Justin Tomlinson MP (Swindon North). To read more about the event and to see more photographs please read  the article in NASS news pages
