Going for Gold: 50 for 50

Since 1976, NASS has been at the heart of a community built on the incredible strength, resilience, and shared experiences of everyone living with axial SpA. This year, we are incredibly proud to celebrate our 50th anniversary.

Everything we have achieved over the last five decades, from shaping NHS policy to driving forward diagnosis and care, from pioneering research to life-changing support, has been possible because of you. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or have just joined our journey, this milestone belongs to all of us.

Now we’re looking at the next 50 years of supporting people with axial SpA, starting with those whose axial SpA is particularly difficult to manage.

But we need your help to do that! In our 50th year, we’re Going for Gold and aiming to raise £50,000 towards this new project.

If you’re looking to give a one-off individual donation, or provide a rolling monthly contribution, use the link provided below which will take you to our dedicated 50 for 50 donation form,

What does ‘Difficult to Manage’ mean?

People whose axial SpA is difficult to manage have usually tried two or more biologics but their symptoms haven’t improved. Or they have particularly high disease activity that is impacting their quality of life.

A recent Canadian study looked at 536 people living with axial SpA, and that 1 in 11 patients, fell into the category of having ‘difficult to manage’ axSpA.

They discovered that these people often had:

  • More pain
  • Higher disease activity
  • More difficulty with daily activities
  • Less spinal mobility
  • Higher levels of inflammation in some cases

Scarlett's Story

Scarlett’s axial SpA is particularly difficult to manage. She has tried traditional pain relief, multiple anti-inflammatories, and all three types of biologic medication. And yet she has not experienced any positive impact on her disease.

Fundraise For NASS

Earlier this year, we invited our community to get involved through our 50th Anniversary Sponsored Walk. Now, there are plenty of other ways you can help us keep the momentum going.

Whether you’re taking on a personal challenge, organising an event with friends, family or colleagues, or have another fundraising idea entirely, every contribution will help us towards our £50,000 ambition.

Small changes can make a big difference. Together, we can Go for Gold.

If you’d like to organise your own challenge, event or fundraising activity in support of 50 for 50, you can set up your JustGiving fundraising page here and make it your own.
