Winner of the NASS Lottery – Chris’s story
“We recently had a £6,000 bill for roof repairs, so winning £2,000 certainly took the sting out of that.”
Chris, who has been a NASS member since 1992, signed up to the NASS Lottery as a way to give monthly support to help other people affected by axial SpA. In May 2025, Chris discovered that he had won £2,000! Here is his story:
“I was first diagnosed with axial SpA in about 1980, when I was in my mid 30’s. Unlike many others, my diagnosis was very speedy. I went to see my GP with hip and chest pains. There were other issues he wanted to rule out, but within three or four weeks he told me that I had ankylosing spondylitis.
I believe that it was my doctor who gave me a NASS guidebook for patients. Shortly after, I was seen by a consultant in Gloucester, who confirmed the diagnosis. I was later put on some biologics and started physiotherapy, which helped.
I joined the NASS Lottery as a way of donating to NASS. I had no expectation of winning anything, so being told that I had won the second prize of £2000 was wonderful! We recently had a £6,000 bill for roof repairs, so winning £2,000 certainly took the sting out of that.
My wife Margaret and I walk about a mile a day, either around our hilltop village, or we drive down the valley to walk along the restored canals (that’s usually flat walking!). Margaret has also had health issues, so we try to keep ourselves mobile as much as possible. We are approaching our 80th birthdays, so I don’t feel that we have done too badly, and we are coping well with our medical challenges.
Other members should enter the NASS Lottery, and they may be as lucky as me! If not, they are supporting a good cause.” – Chris
